Now this is just a beautiful, beautiful one. So commonly used, yet so little understood. Goodbye is a contraction of the parting words, 'God Be With Ye' from the 1400's. When I first read this, I was blown away. A blessing! I never knew.
(No other image could possibly do for this topic- trekkie fan (grin))
I can imagine a time when people took the time to say it in full- 'God be with Ye'. In today's 'omg' and 'rofl' age, it seems a part of the distant past indeed.
I don't think one needs to believe in God to appreciate just how beautiful this blessing is. I believe more in intent that in the actual words spoken, so any blessing means what it does because of the person who blesses- how heartfelt their words are and what they mean by it. I've resolved to say 'Goodbye' and mean it too, now that I know. But I find myself slipping and saying 'bye' meaninglessly. Must take care...so, this one is for you - 'God Be With Ye'...oh, and 'Live Long and Prosper.' Now, beam me up...
