I'm fascinated by how our history has shaped who we are-not just the World Wars or the Industrial revolution, but the little things; one man's actions, one woman's imagination, a random accident...creating ripples that travel through time, changing how we speak, what we eat, where we live...I am especially in awe of the way our language has been influenced by our myths and legends...Etmythology chronicles these words that so easily roll off our lips yet have stories behind them, just like we do.

Bikini
What does a nuclear test site and a bathing suite have in common? Their explosive effect on men!...at least that's what Louis Reard was thinking when he named his two-piece bathing suit.
Apparently in July, 1946, the good old U.S of A. detonated an 23 kiloton atomic bomb on an atoll in the pacific islands called .... Bikini Atoll. Four days later, the designer mentioned above decided to introduce his creation and name it after the atoll as he equated its effects on men to be pretty much the same. Spot on, I'd say.
So there you have it, a bombshell behind a bikini...I meant the story ;)
P.S. I found this gem in my much loved copy of Uncle John's All-Purpose Bathroom Reader (highly recommend it!)
